Couples That Don't Suck!

Ron/Draco
Well, it should be obvious that I like this couple, considering that I run this site. I think they just have this electricity between them that's not present between any other two characters in the books. I guess it's that classic thing where you figure that if they react THAT strongly to each other, there must be something else there. It would be different if they were already friends, and were just always arguing over some trivial thing; then you'd figure that they just can't get along. But the fact that they're not friends, yet they waste all this time fighting with each other, makes you think that maybe they're covering something up. If they didn't care at all, they just wouldn't even give each other the time of day, since they have no obligation to each other.

And you notice that Draco actually spends way more time bothering Ron than he does anyone else, including Harry who's supposed to be his big rival. And really, Draco has no reason to pay special attention to Ron over anyone else. And Ron is the only one who just goes totally insane at practically every single thing Draco says. Plus Ron just seems to always be worrying about what Draco's doing and saying. Like in the first book where he gets all concerned about Draco bullying Neville and starts giving Neville advice. You don't see him seeming to care when Snape bullies Neville. Or like in the fourth book when the trio is supposed to practicing spells, but instead Ron is staring out the window at Draco.

I guess this is one of those "thin line between love and hate" couples; it especially makes you think of that when the 'hate' moments between them are described in the books with phrases such as "in ecstacy" and "best day of my life." I'd also like to point out that the scene at the end of the movie where Draco was giving that cute little smug look to Ron and Ron was all turned around in his chair staring at Draco was totally adorable.

Harry/Hermione
Maybe I got stuck on this couple since I saw the movie before I read the books, and I couldn't help but notice that scene where Hermione starts talking to Harry in this really tender voice about what a great wizard he is while this sweet music plays in the background. That part just has such a blatent romantic tone to it. And of course, the movie WAS approved by JKR herself. Plus the fact that during the parellel scene in the book, Hermione hugs Harry at the end of the speech.

I noticed a lot of other indications towards this couple in the books, too. From the very start, it seems that Harry is really close to Hermione. In the first book, when she was upset, it was Harry who was worried for her and asking about her, and later when they heard about the troll in the school it was he who thought of Hermione and insisted they run off and save her. And in book 4, there was that whole big rumor that Hermione was Harry's girlfriend. Even though it wasn't true, it seemed that no one had any trouble believing it, and it kind of seemed like JKR may have put that part in as some foreshadowing. And then of course there's the famous kiss at the end of book 4. The fact that Hermione kissed Harry on the cheek and it said "she did something she'd never done before" makes it clear that this wasn't just some ordinary thing that she does to her friends every day. Also, Hermione chose Harry's side in both situations when Harry and Ron were having a fight and not speaking. It always seemed that Hermione was just closer to Harry than to Ron, and that she got along with him far better than she ever did with Ron.

I also think Harry and Hermione just work well together. They're obviously really close and get along really well. They have good communication and understanding of each other and thier personalities just kind of fit together. I'd way rather see two friends get together who clearly care a lot about each other and relate well to each other and get along, than two friends who clash against each other and are always complaining about each other and fighting.

Harry/Draco
Despite the fact that I love this couple- actually, it's now easily my favorite couple from the series- I have to say I just never really GOT this pairing. You know that saying, "The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference"? Well that's exactly my problem here: Harry really seems mostly indifferent to Draco. The large majority of the time, Harry doesn't have any big reaction to anything Draco does. He pretty much thinks Draco is a moron whose opinion isn't worth anything. I kind of picture Harry viewing Draco as a mildly annoying fly buzzing around his head.

It really seems Harry doesn't even care if Draco lives or dies. When they were in the forbidden forest, he even said he didn't care if Draco was hurt or killed; and he didn't say in a way like he was messing around joking, and it wasn't something he said in anger, he just said it as a calm statement of fact. Harry was also the only one who didn't seem concerned in the least when Draco was attacked by the Hippogriff- both Hermione and Ron seemed a bit worried until they found out that Draco was just trying to get Hagrid fired.

Plus, when Harry very first met Draco, he said that Draco reminded him of Dudley. It seems to me that that's pretty much the kiss of death to any future relationship right there. And Harry really does seem to have the same attitude towards Draco as he does to his family. That's certainly not love. Overall he seems to just not care much about Draco either way.

I guess Harry's side has always been my main problem with this couple. Of course, that did change a bit in book 6- all of a sudden, Harry started acting like all the H/D Shippers have always claimed he acted: totally obsessing over Draco throughout the entire book. And fanon Draco also became canon in this book, since he was shown crying and confiding in a Muggle-born ghost and it was proven that he didn't have it in him to kill anyone.

Draco's side of this pairing has always seemed a little more plausible to me, since Draco spends so much time bothering Harry, so he obviously cares somewhat. Despite the fact that I see little to no real evidence in canon that these two could ever have feelings for each other, I just find the pairing adorable. Their personalities actually fit well together, and I've seen a lot of good H/D fanfiction that really manages to keep them in character. Frankly, I used to hate this couple, but I suppose a combination of book 6 and some really good fanfics made me start liking it, and I've liked it ever since. Strangely, this couple, which I originally hated, has ended up becoming one of my most enduring favorites from ANY fandom.

Sirius/Remus
I don't find this couple terribly interesting, and I don't see a lot of indication towards it in the books...but on the other hand there's really nothing whatosever AGAINST it in the books, and I have no problems with the idea of it, so I'm just gonna go ahead and say it doesn't suck.

Fred/Angelina
I always thought this was an alright couple; too bad Fred had to die. Fred's was one of the few deaths that I really felt bad about in the books (the other one I really felt bad about was Snape.)

Cho/Cedric
He's dead of course, but while he was alive, they were a really sweet couple. She must have meant a lot to him, since she was the thing he'd miss the most.

Crabbe/Goyle
It really seems to me that these two attended the Yule Ball together.

Serverus/Lily
Despite the fact that Lily was a gigantic bitch who didn't even deserve Severus, he just loved her so much, for so long, and he was such a good and brave person, I feel like he deserves to get what he wants.

Percy/Crouch Sr
With this couple, you have to remember what Freud said: "There's some truth to every joke." And remember, Ron was joking around saying Percy was obsessed with Mr Crouch and was going to marry him. Of course, Crouch being dead may present some problems to this relationship, but I still really like it a lot.

Ginny/Tom Riddle
One of my friends invented this ship and converted me to it. It actually makes some kind of odd sense. Ginny was happy to find someone to finally confide in. And maybe Tom was slightly touched by Ginny's caring for him...if he-who-must-not-be-named had given up his evil ways instead of getting killed, this could have been a cute couple.
