Many people maintain that he is. Thier major evidence is the fact that he crossdresses. But, in fact, James' crossdressing is a Japanese "indise joke" about these old-time actors that used to crossdress. James is a parody of these people. His crossdressing has nothing to do with his sexuality.

Even if you disregard that fact, you must realize that everyone who crossdresses is not gay. James most likely crossdresses to rebel against his parents and society in general. Another theory is that Jesse makes him do it.

Speaking of Jesse: She crossdresses as a man all the time, and you rarely hear people saying she's gay.

Another thing that makes people think James is gay is the fact that his personality is "feminine". This is a stereotype, though. Just because someone has traits of the opposite sex, does not make them homosexual. Again, Jesse has many masculine traits, but few people say she's a lesbian. This is an unfair double standard in our society.

People also site his voice as reason for thinking that he's gay. For one thing, a person's voice really has nothing to do with thier sexual preference, and for another, James' origional Japanese voice is actually very masculine.

Another thing to note is that these stereotypes that people are using to try to prove James is gay are AMERICAN steotypes. These things may signify someone as being gay in the Western World, but Pokemon is Japanese! It's just silly to use Western stereotypes in relation to a Japanese anime.

Also, many of the lines that seemed to point to James being gay were actually dub added. For instance, in the origional version of the second movie, James never said anything about the opposite sex being "trouble he stays out of." Origionally that whole dialogue was actually really Rocketshippy.

Also, there is no concrete evidence of James ever being attracted to another male. This is the only evidence that I would accept for him, or anyone, being gay. He is, however, attracted to a certain female (Jesse), so I would think that this would rule out his being gay. So, in conclusion, if you really need to believe that someone in Pokemon is gay, please look towards a certain boy and his love object/rival.
